[ The main reception hall is impressive, all impossibly high ceilings, white marble and classical style statues. Mitsuru herself seems quite pleased with the arrangement - almost as much as she is pleased to see Nami, although she's carefully guarded about that and doesn't let it play out across her face.
She simply smiles with faint amusement at the question. ]
I find my way around. It's actually of a similar size to one of our main residences back home.
[ It either doesn't occur to her that there's anything unusual about that second sentence or it does and she thinks nothing of it. ]
It's fully customisable, so I modeled it mostly on what I'm familiar with but with a few twists.
[ Used to this and taking a tour of her personal palace daily it is.
Somehow, it's not surprising, despite never having met someone as affluent as Mitsuru's words and behavior hint at her being, it's easy to tell that what Nami might regard as the finer things, Mitsuru likely would just see as - things. It's an intriguing twist that does nothing to deter Nami from wanting to be in her presence. She's curious, even if she's pretty sure their different worlds aren't the least - or the biggest - of their differences.
Plus, it's luxurious up here and such a far cry from the meager accommodations she's been given as a 5 Nami can't help but want to linger. ]
I'm guessing if I offered to show you how to sneak out of your own elevator, you'd be interested. Or are you just a queen back home on your island and don't mind?
[ So what if she's asking questions to see how much she can learn while testing the boundaries between them at the same time? What of it? ]
We have a couple, in addition to our vacation homes in other locations.
[ She has the sense to look just a little embarrassed at this, having seen enough of the reactions from her peers at this point to know that it's not exactly normal. ]
Although I had been spending most of my time living in a dormitory until very recently.
[ Now it's likely going to be just your run of the mill luxurious penthouse apartment while she starts attending college, although she chooses to leave that part out. Along with the fact that said dorm room of hers was also spacious and filled with giant, expensive furniture.
Either way, she's grateful for the change of subject. ]
I would be interested. I'm certainly not a queen back home.
[ A "Princess" or close enough to some maybe, but still. ]
I may have something of interest to show you in return.
[ Other locations? Mitsuru makes her life sound so grand that Kaya from Syrup Village almost looks like a potato farmer in comparison. The flash of bashful apprehension in Mitsuru's expression isn't lost on Nami, although perhaps before meeting the rich girl from her crewmate's hometown, it would have been. Nami's no closer to understanding what life must be like when your every need is met, but part of her can't help but wonder if Mitsuru's as trapped in her life as Kaya had been.
Hopefully, not by a murderous butler.
Nami keeps those thoughts to herself, raising an eyebrow instead at the mention of dormitories rather than secondary vacation homes. ]
I live on a ship, kind of what you've got going, but backwards. [ Instead of going to houses all over the place, her house goes to almost any place. ] Were you studying something?
[ That's not hard to imagine either - and if she's doing a little too much imagining Mitsuru, no she isn't. Nami would swear it's all to size her up. The other woman's got a seriousness about her that would suit a scholarly type of person easily, though she isn't sure that's the beginning and the end of the whole picture. ]
Show me something? [ The corner of her mouth quirks upward, turning her head to look at the other redhead. ] It's not the riding crop is it? [ She knows it isn't, she just wanted to tease her new friend about the welcome gift the other woman finds so perplexing. ]
I was attending high school. [ A pause, while she stops to consider that such a mundane, everyday thing might not be that in some other worlds. ] Do you not have something similar where you're from?
[ She starts to walk then, gesturing for Nami to follow her further down the grand hallway past several rooms that she'll take a moment to pause in the doorway of if the other girl wants to take a closer look at any of them. Her eventual destination is her kitchen.
She raises a brow at the mention of that again. ]
It has nothing whatsoever to do with the riding crop.
It turns out that my accommodation comes with quite a few bonus features that I wasn't initially aware of. A hidden passage being one of them.
[ Nami can gather enough from the context not to take Mitsuru literally - high school isn't literally up high, probably - but she shakes her head at the question. ] Is that a big school where you learn different subjects? Big cities might have those, but, there wasn't anything like that in my village. I learned to read and write from my mom, and I taught myself how to do the rest from books.
[ Another thing to add to the pile of drastic differences between them - not that Nami has the time to think about something like that when she's being led from one grand interior to another. Chuckling as Mitsuru dismisses her little joke about the riding crop, her expression goes from amused to amazed rapidly after stepping into the truly palatial kitchen, wandering further into the room as she debates whether or not Sanji would have a heart attack in ten, or twenty paces if presented with a space to work like this one. ]
A hidden passage? [ Curiousity piqued, Nami's attention returns to Mitsuru, raising her eyebrows at the other woman. ] Where does it take you? Somewhere up here or?
[ Their differences do indeed become starker by the minute, yet Mitsuru doesn't find that off-putting. On the contrary, she finds herself wanting to comment on how much she admires Nami for educating herself that way... but how to do that without sounding patronising? ]
That's admirable.
If my tone sounds patronising then please do not take it as such. I mean it. I'm sure your mother gave you an excellent foundation but teaching yourself the rest cannot have been an easy rendezvous.
[ As they delve further into the kitchen, Mitsuru approaches the door that leads to the pantry. Amidst all of the usual dry goods and noticeably copious amounts of fruits that don't need to be refrigerated (her personal chef had gone overboard once they had discovered what the "Queen" prefers for breakfast), there is a small additional door at the back of the storage space itself. She turns to the other woman. ]
I have absolutely no idea. [ And for once she doesn't mind that. ] I thought we might find out.
[ She is saying this as though there's no question that this exactly what they're going to be doing. ]
I did a lot of chores so I could read a lot of books from the village store.
[ Rather than steal them.
It's oddly...sweet? Hearing Mitsuru commend her efforts to learn, and then carefully try to explain herself almost immediately after. She doesn't look at her (or she might not have the nerve), but Nami reaches out, gently resting her hand on Mitsuru's arm in response. It's a move that's becoming something of a habit between them, speaking volumes to how Nami's still in the process of feeling Mitsuru out and betraying the fact that she wants to keep learning and being near her. ]
Hey can Iā [ That bowl of tangerines amidst the spread in Mitsuru's kitchen is too tempting, and Nami diverts from her spot walking beside the younger woman to drift in their direction, swiping a few from the bowl before she's back at her friend's side without missing that much of a beat. ]
So we're going to find out together? [ Pulling the practical black leather rucksack hanging on her shoulder around, Nami stows the tangerines and pulls out her notebook, quickly turning to the last page she's worked on, ready to add it to the version of the map of this place she's making reserved for her. ]
You know. [ The keenly curious light in her eyes dulls slightly, shooting Mitsuru an acerbic glance as she cocks her head. ] Knowing this place, it's probably going to be something weird and horny on the other side. [ A secret passage is still cool, but Nami's been here long enough that she doesn't think it's out of line to point out the obvious so they're not both shocked when they end up falling into a ballpit of dildos, or something else outlandishly horny. ]
