Really it's about celebrating the day in a way that you enjoy the most. Perhaps by doing something you particularly enjoy, going somewhere you love or spending time with people you care about.
My experience is not the norm but I believe people usually have quite a lot of choice in the matter of how they celebrate it.
I think I would want to do things that I haven't had a lot of time for previously. Perhaps I would go see a movie, buy some books, have a meal somewhere... Not somewhere expensive though, I'd want to try something different.
